LUCKY NUMBER 7: CARDS WIN 7TH GAME IN A ROW, MABE SCORES 29, AND PARKER PAYNE JOINS THE 1,000-POINT CLUB
South Laurel picked up their ninth win of the season and their seventh in a row against Peachtree Ridge (GA) in the Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic.
The Cardinals continue to impress as they extend their win streak against solid competition in Daytona. South defeated Peachtree Ridge (GA) in their second game of the Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic 52-43.
Jordan Mabe poured in twenty-nine points to lead his team offensively. Mabe was able to lead his team today offensively by remaining aggressive throughout the matchup. “My mindset during the game was to attack the rim as much as I could, and just play the game of basketball like I know how”. This was a season high scoring effort by the sophomore.
A huge milestone was accomplished by senior Parker Payne during this contest. Payne added nine points for his team, which pushed him over the 1,000-point club mark for the basketball program. “It feels amazing to finally reach this goal that pretty much every basketball player wants to reach. To be in the 1,000-point club with all the players that came before me feels so good”, shared Payne. This milestone is sweet, but this senior has his eyes set on more as the season continues. “We are always looking to win district, and after that it would be amazing to make a run at the region title with the guys”.
Since the beginning of the season, Coach Davis has had different players step up when they needed them. As a team, they have grown tremendously as the season has continued. “The biggest thing is we are playing more as a team. Our assists are up, and defensively we are improving every game while also finishing possessions”, said Davis.
“Even under not ideal circumstances, we have battled and scrapped to play tough together as a team. This has been an amazing trip for our guys to bond and rely on each other. These guys have been great on and off the floor”.
Davis and his team will compete in the Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic Championship at 10:00am against Boca Ciega (FL). A victory would extend the Cards win streak to eight games and collect their second tournament championship over the break.
