SOUTH LAUREL LIMITS HIALEAH (FL) TO 29 POINTS IN OPENING GAME OF THE DAYTONA BEACH SUNSHINE CLASSIC
The Cards would compete in their first contest since winning their own Legacy Nissan Dribble Drive Tournament Challenge. Coach Davis and his team would battle Hialeah (FL) in their first game of the Daytona Beach Sunshine Classic. A low-scoring contest would ultimately lead to a 48-29 South Laurel victory.
South Laurel jumped right into this game after their three-day break. Naturally, you can expect some sloppy play. “We had a long trip down to Daytona, coming off a three-day break with no practice,” said Davis. “But we still guarded well and were able to pick up a win. Our defense was important, considering we had eighteen turnovers. Overall, it was a good win, and we have a big test Thursday against a talented Peachtree Ridge (GA) squad”.
Eli Gover agreed it wasn’t easy to prepare for a game after a break and long trip to Daytona. “‘Our defensive effort was crucial because of the slow start from our offense. We were traveling, turning the ball over, and not shooting very well. We couldn’t get many shots up before the game either”. Gover and his teammates look to improve their offense in the next contest. “We can improve offensively by seeing the floor better and handling half-court pressure”.
Parker Payne added, “It was very hard to get into the swing of things are being off for an extended time. Defense wins us several ball games, but it’s extra difficult when our offense isn’t executing the way it would be”. Something to improve on is slowing down on offense and getting back into their offensive flow. “We need to slow down on the offensive end and let the ball do the work instead of trying to create things that aren’t there,” said Payne.
South Laurel will play Peachtree Ridge (GA) Thursday at 1:00 pm, looking to keep their win streak alive.
Scoring: Payne 14, Gover 12, Mabe 10, Garland 7, Jones 4, Brown 1
