Cards Score Big

South Laurel takes care of business at home, defeating Knox Central 72-33.

Following a tough loss to a talented Madison Southern squad, South Laurel would cruise to a victory over region opponent Knox Central.

The Cardinal defense would limit the Panthers to only 8 points in the first quarter, leading 21-8. South would add another 20 points in the second quarter, going into the half with a demanding advantage of 41-18.

For the second half, things would look very similar. South Laurel would remain ahead in the third quarter, 60-26, and win the contest 72-33 over visiting Knox Central. 9 South Laurel players would score in the victory.

Coach Jeff Davis was overall pleased with his team's performance. "I thought early on we were forcing things. Once we calmed down, we played a lot better. Our strong defense helped us settle down and play our game. We are doing great things on the court when four players score double figures".

To begin the game, senior Eli Gover was awarded an NROTC scholarship in front of his family, team, and South Laurel crowd. The Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Scholarship is a full-ride $180,000 scholarship to attend a 4-year college or university. While attending school,

Eli will receive training in preparation for future service as a military officer. Upon graduation, Eli is guaranteed a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps.

Eli was stunned and had a few words about the scholarship and his future. "I have worked very hard this past year for this opportunity. Preparing for the physical test, keeping up my grades, and staying focused on this task has been difficult but worthwhile. It means the world to me to go out and serve my country. I have wanted to do this my whole life".

9 Cardinal players scored in tonight's contest. Gover stated, "I think it's wonderful to spread the love and play as a team. We can't win games with only one guy shooting the ball. When somebody comes off the bench, they have to be ready to step up and score".

Scoring: Payne 14, Gover 12, Jones 12, Fullmer 11, Garland 7, Mabe 6, Bundy 4, Helton 4, Whicker 2

Next up for Jeff Davis and the Cardinals will be a road trip to Rowan County. South Laurel will face off against Shelby County in the Stock Yards Bank & Trust Challenge Saturday, December 17th.
