TWICE AS NICE: MABE AND PAYNE PUT UP DOUBLE-DOUBLES IN WIN OVER BREATHITT

South Laurel traveled to Owsley County to participate in the Bobby Bowling Classic. The Cards faced off against a talented Breathitt County squad from the 14th Region. Jordan Mabe and Parker Payne each put up a Double-Double to pull out the win 56-45.

“We were honored to play in an event that honored Bobby Bowling, who coached and was the AD at Owsley County. Bobby was a great man I had the honor of knowing. Cancer is such a terrible disease that has also impacted our family. To play in an event that helps support that is special, and I will always do what I can to help out”, said Davis. It was an honor to play against BB King’s team who we sadly lost this year. This was a special day just all around”.

“We didn’t start out really well offensively, but we settled down defensively and gave ourselves a chance to get back in the game. We did a really good job in the second quarter by limiting them to only 2 points. We did a great job moving the ball and finding the open man while also getting second and third chances. We had 13 offensive rebounds and out rebounded them 40-27.

Parker and Jordan each had a double-double which was huge. Eli and Caden were also able to knock down some big shots when we needed them. Overall, it was a great team effort”. Eli Gover mentioned, “This game was very important because it was a great preparation before tournament play. It was a learning experience with the rough style of play. We were able to keep our composure in a tight game all the way to the end to secure the win”. Parker Payne would add,” We sat down and guarded on the defensive end which is always a must. We shared the ball offensively and played physically. This is something we are going to have to do down the stretch in tournament play”.

With this win, South improved their record to 17-7 on the season. South will travel to Lynn Camp Tuesday, February 7th for their next challenge.
