BIG WIN IN THE BURG

The South Laurel Cardinals scored their second win of the season

against the Jackets, winning 62-36.

For the second time this season, South Laurel would find themselves victorious over Williamsburg. The Cardinals have held the Jackets to only 61 total points combined from both contests.

“I was really proud of our energy level tonight”, said Davis. “We really came out focused defensively which allowed us to get out in transition. The guys were locked in and communicating. For the most part, we followed the scouting report and finished off possessions.

Offensively, we were more fluid and made great decisions. When we are moving the ball and cutting hard, good things happen”.

Davis wants to see his team continue this on Friday against Whitley County. “It will take another great defensive effort and doing the little things to get better looks”. Friday’s contest will be another huge challenge for the Cards. “We can’t have empty possessions with bad shots or turnovers. Our guys will continue to work and push each other to get better. I’m really proud of how we have been practicing and improving each day”.

The South Laurel defense has limited the Williamsburg offense to a total of 61 points from both games. Bundy was impressed with his team’s performance. “We had a pretty good defensive performance tonight. We had a few moments where we didn’t follow the scouting report, but we were able to talk out of it. Friday, we have to pay much closer attention to win. Our communication on defense saved us multiple times tonight and allowed us to get back into position”.

Offensively, communication was much better tonight for the Cardinals. Mabe thought that “On the offensive end, we were able to execute a lot better than Friday. We took good shots and focused on driving the ball to the basket. Payne added, “We were able to get to our spots better offensively and execute our game plan. Defense is always gonna hold us down when we aren’t hitting shots, but luckily, we were able to sit down and guard while hitting shots tonight. Gover also mentioned that he thought his teammates, “were able to get inside the paint and distribute the ball, which overall led to better shots and a higher shot percentage”.

Next, the Cardinals will host Whitley County for the last district game of the season. “To beat Whitley County Friday, we have to share the ball better offensively and guard better off the ball defensively”, said Payne. Mabe added that against Whitley, “We need to guard the whole game and execute on offense as we know how”. Gover would finally add, “Friday, we must sit down and keep our heads for four straight quarters to pick up the win”.

South Laurel will host Whitley County Friday, with tipoff set for 7:30 pm.

Scoring: Gover 16, Payne 16, Mabe 16, Steele 6, Jones 4, Garland 2, Fullmer 1
